Getting Lean Vs. Staying Lean

If you were to ask me today if I could give you the perfect program to “get lean”, I would answer you with an overwhelming YES. Of course I can. I know about caloric intake. I know how to calculate your basal metabolic rate. I know all about the macronutrients. I know how to make a plan. And I can execute one.

But you could also ask another nutrition expert and they could also help you get lean.  They may even give you a different program and you still might get lean.

Although the overall diet you would get from both of us may be different (say macro based vs the-carb diet) the process and the results would be the same:

  • You followed the diet
  • You exercised
  • You had a negative energy balance
  • You lost weight

Then you might just gain in all back after a short period of time…

And if you were to spin that around and ask me if I can help you stay lean, I might take a minute to think about it and my confidence would definitely sway. Getting lean and staying lean are two totally different asks. Getting lean relies on following a program and good adherence for a short period of time. But staying lean is influenced by so many things that answering yes to this question would be hard to do.

  • Goals
  • Body Type
  • Values
  • Budget
  • Time
  • Lifestyle
  • Age
  • Knowledge
  • Community

Staying lean is so much more than the food itself. It is how we eat and live. And I have begun to realize that if I want to help others and help myself be where we want to be, we need to focus not just on the negative energy balance but more importantly on the lifestyle factors instead.

Yes, a good nutrition program needs to control calorie balance, give us good nutrients, help us look, feel and perform or best, be sustainable for us and the planet, but most of all, good nutrition is about removing our limiting factors that are standing between us and our goals.

We need to find the right path that works for each one of us. And all of our paths are going to be different.

And I think I have found the right program to do this. I am really excited to be going through the Precision Nutrition program alongside a group of Limitless Performance members to learn both the what (i.e. the food itself) and how (i.e. how we eat and live) to influence our change and reach our goals. And stay there.

Follow along as I blog about the ups and downs I encounter through this 12 month program of change. Staying lean here we come!
