My Impossible Goals

Raise your hand if you also think that big goals are scary! Yeah, me too!

There is something about a fresh start when that clock turns midnight on New Years Eve. It’s a special time of year that we can wash away any negative feelings and feel revived. It’s like our bodies are given a new set of batteries to light us up. We want to be that person we have always wanted to be.  We set some major goals for the new year upon us and we are pumped about them!

As the weeks begin to fly by as 2019 rolls on, how are we doing with these goals?l Are they progressing? Are they stagnant? Are they not even in the back of our mind?

For most, as the weeks pass by, the lights seem to dim and those goals seem too far out of reach. A study done by Statistic Brain, claims that 25% of Americans don’t even make it through their first week and 54% don’t make it past 6 months…

I have never been one to set crazy major goals, which I haven’t quite figured out all the reasons for not. But big goals always just seemed so far out of reach to me, not really part of my “realist” personality. Yes, this holds me back sometimes… I have always been more of a day by day person just trying to get better by putting in the work. Luckily I was a team sport’er so I was pushed by others and the major goals were set for me. Maybe I joined these sports as my subconscious knew I needed to set big goals and I wasn’t going to do them myself.

As my years out of team sports have flown by, I have been figuring out how to be a realist and at the same time push toward some major goals and maybe even creating some impossible goals. Being strategic and breaking things down into manageable day to do pieces has been a game changer for me.  It is no longer about this far fetched dream. It is about the process and the day to day events that keep me organized and on track to reach them.

Let’s take a peek at what this looks like and how we can break those massive goals down into manageable pieces.

Setting My BIG GOALS

  1. Outcome Goals – Our big dreams, something that is out of our control
    • Ex: Place top 5 in a 5km Race
  2. Performance Goals – Help us reach those big goals, what you are actually trying to achieve
    • Ex: Run a 5k in 18 min

3. Process Goals – Under your control

  • Daily and weekly habits that are very manageable
  • Necessary, as they give us small wins along the way that we can celebrate
  • Ex: Train 4 x per week (1 tempo run, 1 long run, 1 hill sprints, 1 recovery run)

Can we just set these amazing goals knowing that the outcome is out of our control? Believing that no matter what the outcome, we can be proud of the process? Can we focus on the process and be vulnerable to the fact that we may not reach our BIG goals? I hope so. 🙂 In order to pursue these dreams we must be willing to try, learn and try again but be accountable to ourselves for what is in our control – our day to day processes.

Are you ready to get the most out of your days? To create those process goals and to help reach those goals?
